Dear Parents,
I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself as I will be spending a considerable amount of time in your student’s classroom, Core 61. My name is Dustin, and I am currently a teacher candidate enrolled in the Teacher Education Program at the University of the Fraser Valley. I have spent most of my life living in Chilliwack and received my degree in English Literature through UFV in 2014. My studies also included a focus on Mandarin and Thai language studies, and I was lucky enough to call China and Thailand home, as I lived and studied language briefly at both USST in Shanghai and CMU in Chiang Mai. All-in-all, I have spent over two years living, studying, and traveling the world.
Ever since my youth I have enjoyed teaching, tutoring, or sharing the knowledge I had to give. Though I am new to this form of classroom teaching, I have a wide assortment of teaching experience ranging from climbing gym tutoring sessions to teaching elders basic computer and internet skills at UFV. A year ago, I finished my contract work as an online ESL tutor for children ages 4-14 based out of China, and began my studies again. Since then, I have volunteered time locally at Vedder Elementary in all grades from 2 through 5, and I volunteered at G.W. Graham in their grade 10 outdoor education program, GrahamX.
Outside of school, my hobbies consist of anything that gets me into the outdoors. I am passionate about the world-class geography we have here on the West Coast, and partake in hiking, climbing, mountain biking, and other activities, rain, shine, or snow! Though I do not get out as much since classes started again in August, I am excited to be in my last school year of studies before becoming a licensed teacher, and could not be happier with my practicum placement in your student’s grade 6 classroom! If you have any questions, by all means feel free to contact Mrs. Cuervo.
With Kind Regards,
Dustin de Jong
